Travel management - Travel management has been a hot topic for almost 8 years.  And, it is a topic that continues to bedevil OHV recreation and Forest Service personnel.  At issue is a minor thing called money.  Now, the Forest Service needs money to pay the salaries and materials necessary to maintain a fixed number of miles of designated trails.

The Forest Service managers are looking at declining budgets and increasing cost for salaries and materials.  They want as few miles of trail as possible to stay within their expected budgets.

On the other hand is recreation and the growing demand for access to the forests for recreation.  That access depends on trails.  Each mile of trail comes at a cost.

The challenge is to arrive at a number of trail miles that meets user demand and stays with the budget dollars available.  How much is enough?  What say you?
